Behind Us the Way Grows Wider Collected Poems 19802013 eBook Sheila Bender
Poetry is mystery to me. I have no talent for it, no clue how to create it. But I know full well the poetic master as I read this contemplative, quiet work of the spirit that leads me through a life story told in such an exquisite way. I settle myself and curl up into this collection to find myself caught up in this magic, following Sheila's losses and triumphs.i discover we are both grandaughters of women named Ida, that the death of a fish means the same to all boys, that articulating pain and triumph is a gift from the heart. Sheila is direct but with tenderness, leading me along straight into her experience without hesitation to surety of understanding. And wrapped inside it all, I hear a quiet joy in her willing embrace of life and the treasure of living it. This will be my go-to book when I need an anchor on my own treacherous seas.Barbara Ayars

Behind Us the Way Grows Wider Collected Poems 19802013 eBook Sheila Bender Reviews
Sheila's words are a light in the darkest of places. The lyrical honesty of her experience in loss is both heart-wrenching and soul lifting. She gently takes you by the hand and shows you peace.
Sheila Bender's new and collected poems are why we turn to poetry. Her work is intimate, risky, and full of humanity. She has lived a life of intense highs and lows, and she has captured them in her writing. Like she says of her father, she too lets us know her burden and her soul. It is the kind of book one could give to anyone--not just another poet. The poems are gorgeous and accessible--they lift off the page. Bender sums up her work best in her poem, "Poem of Sustenance" "This is the poem that stands/in the moonlight singing,/that rises from sleep/because in darkness stars/ are seen..."
Each poem made me want to live, to write and to think... Each poem triggered something familiar in me. As the title says Behind us the way does grow wider and poetry makes it possible to hold it all. Thank you Sheila Bender.
The grief and sorrow she experiences after her son's passing away suddenly after his fun skiing. How life can turn around in a moment is something she has shown in her writing.
In Sheila Bender's new volume of poetry, she reaches deep into her heart
and touches mine with her gifts of language, real life vicissitudes
woven beautifully with metaphor and a true wonder for surrounding nature.
These poems resonate with me in looking back at childhood, dreams,
times of joy, love in its many faceets, family, illness, loss, grief ---
and while reading them I felt I was not alone.
One poem stands out; it's called "Poetry," and Bender speaks directly
to poetry for all it does in calling to her, her "fated life companion. . .
ethereal as the ocean's spindrift, muscular as its undertow."
I don't know why this is in the middle of the book; I thought it
should be at the start. I have photocopied it and pinned it above
my desk.
(I ordered this book through ; two days later I was a most
happy customer)
